Opportunity Card Score
The Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) requires at least 6 points. If your score falls short, which levers can you pull?
First, Clarify Where You Stand
In the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) application, you need at least 6 points once you meet the basic requirements. The first step is accurately calculating how many points your current profile earns under the official criteria — most applicants either under- or over-count themselves here.
1. The Strongest Lever: Language Level
Language is the area where you can raise your score fastest: German A2 earns 1 point, B1 earns 2, and B2 or above earns 3; English at C1 also adds 1 extra point. A few months of intensive German study alone can make a difference of 2–3 points.
2. Partial Recognition: 4 Points in One Line
Having your diploma partially recognized in Germany earns you 4 points — the single biggest point item. Because a recognition application takes time, we recommend anyone planning for the Opportunity Card start their recognition process at the earliest stage. And if full recognition comes through, the points requirement disappears entirely.
3. Document Your Experience
Work experience is worth 2–3 points depending on duration — but only experience you can document counts. Collecting your social security records, employment letters, and reference letters completely is a prerequisite for getting the points you’ve earned.
4. Get the Timing Right
Applicants under 35 get 2 points, those 35–40 get 1. If you’re approaching the age threshold, moving your application timeline earlier can save the point you’d otherwise lose.
5. Is Your Profession on the Shortage List?
If you’re in one of Germany’s labor-shortage occupation groups, you earn 1 extra point. Healthcare, technical trades, and IT are perennial fixtures on these lists.
